The best use of street-view technology is if you need to go to a new place in a new country the very next day on time you can be well prepared in advance by getting a feel of the surroundings rotating at 360. It’s like you are physically present there. I roamed around streets of USA, parts of Europe, Australia, South Africa and tried to understood their civic planning, urban spaces, roads and wished we had such civic infrastructure in our cities. ![]() But I discovered later that street-view was available for developed countries only who could afford such technology. One day knowing about street view functionality I got super excited that I would be able to roam around the roads wherever I want. I spent hours on it seeing mountains, rivers, roads, and how patterns change when we zoom out. I never imagined that one day I would be able see the earth so vividly from the sky without flying from the comfort of my computer. It was re-released as Google Earth in 2005 for free use on personal computers. Google Earth is a virtual globe, map and geographical information program that was originally called EarthViewer 3D created by Keyhole, Inc, a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) funded company acquired by Google in 2004. Now I could fly wherever and whenever I wanted without rolling my finger on the globe model. My interest in exploring world through paper maps got superannuated. When I first got to know about Google Earth in 2009, it was not less than a Pandora’s Box for me. ![]()
